The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Sohar

(See photos below)

Now, the Sultan Qaboos grand mosque in Muscat is very well known for many things. It’s architecture, it’s marble, it’s size and of course, it’s visitors from all over the world. It’s located in the Capital of Oman (Muscat) which is of course, where most people visit and stay so, it makes sense to visit it right? Well, a few months ago on Instagram, I saw a photo of a mosque which caught my eye. It was in Oman but I had no idea where it was. I sent my friends a photo of it and they had no idea either. So, I sent the person who uploaded it a message and they said “Sohar”.

Now, I knew NOTHING about Sohar. I had no idea how far away it was from Muscat, I had no idea how to get there, what existed in Sohar and I had no idea where in Sohar the mosque was. So, I spent around half an hour doing some research and making sure it was the right mosque. I charged up my camera and set my alarm for 6am the next day,

Sohar is about 2 hours and 15 minutes away from Muscat and is a pretty straight forward drive. You can take two routes. The express way or the main road. I recommend the main road as you pass a few towns which makes the drive a little bit less boring.

The mosque is surprisingly right there when you enter Sohar. I was expecting it to be a little out of the way but nope, it was right there and my god what a beautiful mosque it is. It can fit 4,600 people. There is plenty of parking. Not much information is really available on the mosque if I’m honest which is fine because the architecture makes up for it.

I arrived at the mosque at around 10am which was a perfect time as it was extremely quiet (I think I was the only one there). Oh and take a wide angle lens with you for those beautiful architecture photos.
