This is one of Omans most popular mosques for tourists. So here’s a few interesting facts about it. Firstly, it’s the largest mosque in Oman. Secondly, the mosque is built from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone. There’s a male and female prayer section and the mosque can hold up to 25,000 people at once. Thirdly, it was the largest single piece carpet in the world up until the Sheikh Zayyed mosque was constructed in Abu Dhabi. The carpet is also hand woven. Fourthly, the chandelier used to the be worlds largest chandelier until the Sheikh Zayyed mosque was constructed in Abu Dhabi.
This mosque is hard to miss as it is located right next to the main road in Muscat. It is also one of Muscats top tourist attractions. To get there, all you need to do is drive to Ghubra which isn’t far depending on where you’re staying on your visit, but it should roughly take 15 minutes if you’re staying in Shatti Al Qurum and about 30 minutes if you’re staying at the Al Bustan Palace hotel, The Shangrilah or Jumeira Muscat Bay.
There is no entry fee and the opening times are 8am-11am so you might want to get there as soon as the mosque opens for tourists as it can get quite busy during the popular winter season.
